Creative Counting

Math is more than memorizing numbers. Understanding how they can be grouped, organized,
visualized, and even touched brings numbers to life. Frequently you can find our Kindergartners working together, using manipulatives, to open all learning opportunities.
Today’s lesson began with a normal level of chaos as they each poured their nine objects out and worked through identifying their total. Their answers were as chaotic as their pours. But after working through grouping options, organizing their manipulatives around a plate, and creating a structured starting point; their answers all fell in line… NINE! Students even flexed their own independence and worked the problem again on their own.
After they worked their fine motor muscles, they headed to their desks for worksheets identifying the number nine. They practiced writing it and are on their way to being a perfect 10!
